" and bob franken and jared bernstein, former economic policy adviser to joe biden. that's a mouthful. jared, let's start with you. you have worked with vice president biden. as you know, he's been called on by mitch mcconnell to help with these last-minute talks. what do you think his role is now with so little time left? >> well, the vice president goes way back with senator mcconnell, and i've been in the room when they have talked, and it doesn't sound like two partisans separated by deep ideology. it sounds like guys who know how to bang out a deal. that said, if that were up to them perhaps they could get somewhere, but there are so many other forces swirling around this right now. i'm kind of in the same camp as kristen and the other political analysts we just heard from. if we are starting to hear things getting further apart rather than closer apart at this late date, i don't know that a decades old friendship between a couple of senators -- former senator and current one are going to make that much difference at this point. >> paul, let me play for you what senator lindsey graham s

. jared bernstein, storm former economic adviser. we don't know what the risks are of what might happen january 1st. there's a risk it could be horrible. that's all i'm saying. tell me what you saw in athens n greece when you were just there. >> i've traveled to greece quite a bit over the last few years for political work i've done there in the past. i don't know how to express it any more clearly than it was unbelievably sad and depressing. i mean, the country is in a great depression. unemployment is about 25%. unemployment among youths is about 55%. the economy contracted by 7.2% in the last quarter. those are numbers. i'll tell what you i saw which i think is more powerful. you go through different parts of greece, the greek stores closed everywhere. you go down near the acropolis, where there's a shopping area, called the palatka, and stores closed everywhere. the most powerful story was i was in a cab going back to my hotel and i said, how are things going, and he said, terrible. after expenses, i live on $10 day. the protests are not as frequent as sometimes you see. but there w

're not close to a deal, not yet. joining us is jared bernstein, former economic policy adviser to vice president joe biden, an msnbc and cnbc contributor, and a man who is very good at finding the deal. jared, it's good to see you. >> good to see you, ezra. >> so let me start with the news of the day here. what do you think of the somewhat vague reports we're hearing about offers flying back and forth? >> i think a little bit of it, and not a lot. when i read in the paper as i did this morning that there is some sunlight breaking out, i'm ready for tomorrow saying no. in fact, it's all darkness. i do think that the president's move to come down $200 billion on his revenue number is real and important. it's as you said earlier, once they start negotiating over numbers like that, some good things could potentially happen. on the other hand, there is some of this public negotiating going on. i thought speaker boehner's comments today were uniquely pretty unhelpful because he made a bunch of statements that i think were factually incorrect about the details in his plan versus the president

munson and jared bernstein, cnbc contributor and former chief economist under vice president joe biden. we'll hopefully get andrew in a second, and we also have rick santelli who joins us as always at this time. gentlemen, fantastic to have you with us. lee, on this news it seems as if the market is getting its hopes up. personally i feel i will believe it when i see it. would you agree? >> yeah. you should wait until this is actually the ink is dried. here's one thing that's really changed in sentiment over the last week, mandy. last week everybody was talking about having this deal baked into the bryce price. now all of a sudden, as if some miracles happened, traders are actually talking about buying more puts and putting on more hedges. i can tell investors out there that it doesn't matter if december 31st we have a deal or if it goes a few weeks in january. all we need to know sunday night, monday morning is that they are working on a deal, and they are still at table. outside of that everything is just noise. >> jared, you know washington very, very well. we've been trying to read

connel and reid can hammer something out. the senate hasn't passed a budget in years, jared. tell me, how is harry reid going to come up with something by monday? >> well, as you've been stressing for most of the show, correct me, this is not a budget. this is a last-minute deal that's going to have a few components and i will count them on one hand that will have a tax threshold. 250. i wouldn't be surprised if they went to him with a higher number. u.n. extension, doc fix and the umt with the sequester and that would be it. >> jimmy p., what do you think? will we have a deal on monday and is it going to be enough? >> i think we will have a deal. one big difference now than maybe a couple of weeks, three weeks ago is a lot of republicans believe that eventually they really believe that the president would cave and they would cave again just like they did in 2010 that if he's so worried about a second recession would just smear his second term and he would cave. if you saw the president today in the news conference, he did not look like a guy about to cave to me. he's not going cave. this deal wil
